Have a Beautiful Prayer on Shivaratri Night

Written by Gede Prama

In this realm there are many sacred teachings.  There are sacred teachings that are close to the full moon, some are close to the crescent moon, some are close to the moonless night, some are comfortable when there is a semicircular moon in the sky.  It is similar to entering a vast forest that contains a lot of creations.  Without the right compass, the chances of getting lost are very high.

It’s like entering a large pharmacy that sells a lot of medicines.  Without knowing what the actual disease is, someone is guaranteed to be confused when entering a pharmacy.  That is why, there is an old holy book that gives a beautiful guidelines like this: “The king of knowledge is the knowledge of who you are”.

Without sufficient self-knowledge, not only the world of politics and power, even sacred teachings can be very confusing.  Tonight is the night before the moonless night.  Devotees of Shiva in Bali call it a sacred night. Although, not everyone is compatible with vitamin C. Not everyone is compatible with teachings related to dark nights.

For beginners, those dark things tend to be avoided.  Understandably because it is for beginners.  On the other hand, for mature souls, or even luminous souls, dark things are high-level Masters.  In Tantra teachings there are stories like this.  One day there was a student who showed signs of maturity.  By his Master he was sent to the darkest and most terrifying valley around the Himalayas.

He was asked to stay there for months.  Just by himself.  In the first night the sword fell from the sky.  In the following night, a rain of human skulls also fell from the sky.  Gradually the skull filled with tongue and blood.  In essence, the longer he stay, many more challenges he got there.  At first, of course, he was afraid.  But because of shamed and feeling reluctant with his Master, he chose to stay.

After some time passed, the horror and terrifying things disappeared.  Leaving a very bright soul.  The lesson is that the teaching related to dark nights is safer if it is occupied by mature and radiant souls.  The scary things in nature are truly symbols of Guru.  It helps humans to find the dark sides in them.

From fear, panic to confusion.  Once the darkness within is found in a balanced manner, there one understands through personal attainment that both the dark side and the bright side are part of the same-self.  One of the legendary examples recorded in history in this regard is the seconds before Gautama Buddha experienced enlightenment.

The satan Mara attacked him all out.  From sexual temptation to life threatening attacks.  A professor from Oxford summed up these moments of enlightenment very brightly: “In the moment when Prince Siddharta accepted satan Mara as part of himself, from that moment he was no longer Prince Siddharta, He was a Buddha”.  That is a beautiful example of direct encounter with darkness.

Once darkness is embraced as part of the whole and complete-self, it will no longer brings fear.  It presented the most beautiful gift that could be obtained in the spiritual world, named wholeness.  In the language of the physicists’ friends: “Health comes from whole”.  The healing of the soul comes from the immediate attainment of wholeness.  Have a beautiful prayer to all beautiful friends.

Gede Prama

Gede Prama started his spiritual journey through a dialogue with his symbolic Guru in a village at the north of Bali. The journey is then being enriched with his experiences of studying abroad, his meetings with the world greatest spiritual Gurus: His Holiness Dalai Lama, The Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, as well as Professor Karen Armstrong; and also being deepened by his intense meditation practices.

Despite the fact that he was once a CEO of a large corporation with thousand of employees, and was traveling abroad frequently for the purpose of teaching, yet, being deeply moved by the Bali bombing incident in 2002, he then decided to leave everything and went back to his home island.
He has never leave Bali for the past few years. In fact, he rarely leaves the silence of the forest where he lives, except for the purpose of teaching at the sacred sites within Bali.
