Placing the True Guru in a Honorable Position

Written by Gede Prama

Here are three examples of souls that are not only safe and sound by placing a true Guru in an honorable position, but who have also grown to be Light bearers for the world for a long time.

Bima in Hinduism was repeatedly told to lie by his teacher, Drona. But his deep devotion to the true Guru made him carry out his Master’s orders diligently and sincerely. In the end, it has been recorded in history, when there was a desperate battle against Duryodana, Bima’s life was saved by a true teacher named Shri Krisna.

In Buddha there is a story of Asangha who studied in Buddha Maitriya (Buddha of Compassion). As soon as he loved his Guru, he search everywhere for his Guru and did not find him. After being tired, one day Asangha encountered a sick, dirty looking dog. Guided by faith, this dog was cared for by Asangha as a form of deep devotion to his Guru. As deep as Asangha’s devotion to his Guru was, the maggots in this dirty dog’s body were cleaned using his own tongue. So it will less hurt for the dog. After the dog was clean, it turned into Buddha Maitriya. Overjoyed, Asangha carried his Master all around the market. And everyone called Asangha mentally ill for carrying a dirty dog. But there is an old lady with a very beautiful heart can see, the dog’s feet are Maitriya Buddha’s feet.

Lama Atisha is an Indian teacher who experienced perfect enlightenment in Indonesia in the Srivijaya era. His spiritual achievements are never in doubt. In his old age, Lama Atisha was cared for by a very close disciple named Dromtonpa on the earth’s roof of Tibet, in a very touching way. Dromtonpa experienced complete enlightenment when he removed the dirt of Lama Atisha using his bare hands. It should be noted carefully, it was this Dromtonpa who in his next life was born as the first HH Dalai Lama. It has been recorded in history, HH Dalai Lama XIV, who now received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, became an honorary citizen of the Senate of the United States and Canada. It is unimaginable, the devotional service that was carried out in the 11th century still bears such beautiful fruit until this century.

The lesson then, put the true Guru in a place of honor in the heart. See the true Guru as Light that borrow a human body. Then carry out what was taught by Him. Compassion’s very close family is often given the message: “A stomach that is not big, a family that does not disperse, emotions that do not burn easily”.

To get there, close friends are asked to perform at least 100 thousand times Namaskara, answer the question “who am I” at least two thousand answers, and are invited to perform long services. If namaskara is purifying, service is perfecting. Above all, pain embraced with complete sincerity is a very refining appearance of Guru.

Above all, always keep it in the heart: “He who places the true Guru in an honorable position, is making the journey of his soul also in an honorable position”.

About the author

Gede Prama

Gede Prama started his spiritual journey through a dialogue with his symbolic Guru in a village at the north of Bali. The journey is then being enriched with his experiences of studying abroad, his meetings with the world greatest spiritual Gurus: His Holiness Dalai Lama, The Venerable Thich Nhat Hanh, as well as Professor Karen Armstrong; and also being deepened by his intense meditation practices.

Despite the fact that he was once a CEO of a large corporation with thousand of employees, and was traveling abroad frequently for the purpose of teaching, yet, being deeply moved by the Bali bombing incident in 2002, he then decided to leave everything and went back to his home island.
He has never leave Bali for the past few years. In fact, he rarely leaves the silence of the forest where he lives, except for the purpose of teaching at the sacred sites within Bali.
